Founder
Projectguggenheim, Inc, USA

Dr Hans Guggenheim is an Anthropologist who taught at MIT and Harvard and is the founder of www.projectguggenheim.org,  which builds art academies and art programs in different countries such as Mali,Guatemala, China.

In his own work as an artist he is interested in developing his style of single line drawings.

Collecting teaches humility, that ownership is temporary, that our collections survive us

The artist’s creativity in shaping the identity of many of our cultures is well recognized, but the creativity and the heuristic cross-cultural function of   collectors and the role of their collections over time perhaps less so. One of the joys of collecting lies in its transformative character of establishing new contextual relationships and a new order between objects and so to create new meaning. That is why I exhibited my collection of Goya’s Disasters of War at the Nanjing Museum together with paintings by Chinese children.

Whereas collecting art gives pleasure in the present, it is future oriented and carries risks. As the Mei/Moses indices show the value of investments in modern art had a 20% growth rate in 2006 , higher than the S&P. The market for Chinese artists such as Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun, Wang Guangyi, is especially vigorous but Art-tactic foresees the search for additional artists. (140) A critical question for many collectors: how to transform the value of a work of art in financial terms: a Klimt portrait valued at $ 35 million three years ago into one purchased by R. Lauder for $135 million in October 2006?

We owe a debt to Emperor Hui-tsung and Qianlong, the Medici, the Rockefellers and the Guggenheims for encouraging and collecting  great art.Today private and institutional mega collectors such as Charles Saatchi seek to direct creativity with democratic initiatives such as worldwide art competitions on the Internet or at international art fairs. We need match young artists worldwide with a new generation of art savvy collectors. One innovative training program for collectors is sponsored by Sotheby, but I propose here to you to call for an internationally recognized, future oriented MCC degree program at universities: a Master’s Degree in Creative Collecting.
