Júlio Rafael Cançado Cogo graduated in Philosophy from the Federal University of Santa Catarina after completing research into the Freirian philosophy of education for liberation. Since 2002, he has developed community projects as an art-educator working with children and adolescents, focussed on ecological issues and urban questions of identity, and working with women on questions of community. Today he is the pedagogical coordinator of the Association of Parents and Friends of Children and Adolescents (APAM) in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, and Coordinator of Funding and Solidarity in the national executive of the Brazilian Association of Arteducadores (ABRA). He is currently studying Waldorf Pedagogy.
Creativity and Globalization
One of the most tragic effects of globalization, particularly in poorer countries, has been on cultural democracy and participatory politics where poor populations have been isolated in ghettoes of poverty, and social services have been turned into products of deteriorating cultural and social quality, and come to be seen as even disposable. A new form of domination has developed through addiction to consumerism as leisure, far worse than the effects of drugs and alcohol, stimulated through the powerful resources of marketing and the new media.
Art in community context and the use of free technologies can create forms of resistance to this new form of colonization, offering spaces for the nurturing and construction of new cultures, for reviving cultural origins and memory, and for celebrating human creativity. The alliance art and education has the power to awaken in human beings sensitivity and desire, creating a powerful way of freeing oneself from contemporary prisons of already-defined and marketed options.
