Assistant Professor
Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University

Choi Yan-Chi is an artist, teacher as well as an artist-curator. She is an active participant in HK arts since the early 80s. In 1993 she was invited as one of the first HK artists to take part in the First Asia Pacific Triennial in Australia. In the same year she was given a one person show at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Choi has been regarded as one of the forerunners to initiate new art movement in HK. 1998 she was awarded artist of the year by Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Choi has taken part in numerous overseas shows and was a grantee of Asia Cultural Council . In 1992 Choi was invited to take part in the first conference on Contemporary Asia Art by Asia Society in New York. In 1996 Choi curated a show in Canada titled °•Beyond the stock market and Kung Fu movie, an exhibition of Hong Kong art presented by the Hong Kong Trade and Economic Office . In 1998 Choi started the idea of forming an independent art space. She is now the vice-chairperson and one of the founders of 1A Space, a progressive art organization and has successfully helped setting up the Cattle Depot Artist Village in Hong Kong. It is an important new ground for promoting alternative art and cultural activities.

Her latest one person show ‘re-vision and re-fabrication’ was presented in both in Parasite and 1A Space in 2006.
