Mrs Cecile Guidote Alvarez graduated Summa cum Laude with a dual degree of BA and BS in Education from the St Paul University in 1962. She also attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas from 1965-66 on John D. Rockefeller III Fund Scholarship and graduated with an MA.  She holds a PhD  in Humanities (Honaris Causa)- Polytecnic University of the Philippines (2007).

She has been honored with many awards- Ninoy Aquino Award for Nationalism, Carlos P. Romulo Award for International Understanding, Outstanding Manilan, CCP Gawad Sining Award for Culture, Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service. Selected as the Philippines Arts Representative comprising 1000 Women Nominee Selection for Nobel Peace Prize, she is the first Filipina elected in the UNESCO/ International Theatre Institute Board.

Democratization of the right to culture means Arts is not for the elite alone. Vulnerable groups are creatively empowered by digging the gold mine of talents as a capacity-confidence building for social transformation and self reliance.

By applying theatre’s healing-therapeutic power, the disabled/disadvantaged/ tribal or street children/ victims of abuse, disaster, armed conflict traumatized by loss, repression and neglect are rehabilitated and integrated. Through reflection, participation and collaboration in various artistic expressions that draw meaning and power from the lives and language of our people, the will is forged to overcome difficulties, with a passionate pursuit of the dream for a healthy, just, peaceful and sustainable world.

Besides providing employment opportunities for recycled “handicapables”, the creative industries of our indigenous peoples whose survival are equally threatened as our endangered species are promoted. Their wisdom of living in harmony with nature is mainstreamed via partnerships with the business sector, civic/ religious groups who can assist with micro-lending cooperative development and marketing.

People must be informed through cultural symbols they can empathize to understand issues, break away from prejudices, get engaged in good citizenship and good governance. More than speeches, a performance, of inspiring stories of love, heroism and courage of commitment can sensitize a nation and recharge its memory.
