The Role of Healing In the Arts: Using Creativity As A Tool for Delivering Health to Our Fractured Societies
This concept is based on the significant field work as well as academic work done by APPAN (The Asia-Pacific Performing Arts Network) on the theme of using creativity, based on both traditional art forms as well as contemporary genres, to promote individual and community health.
APPAN’s preparation for this work came through eight international conferences organized all over Asia. Most significantly, it has come through a unique project conceptualized by APPAN in delivering stress therapy to post-tsunami and other disaster-hit regions such as the earthquake devastated parts of Indonesia, all through 2005 and 2006. With the support of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, the APPAN artistes and volunteers organized field visits by specially trained, therapeutic teams of dancers, puppeteers and theatre workers to sites in three countries, Indonesia, Thailand and India. Its success has encouraged two follow-up workshops in Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean and more such work is in different stages of execution.
APPAN’s preparation for this work of social empowerment came through eight international conferences organized all over Asia. They were intensive explorations, at two levels, the academic and the performative. They have looked at the paradigm of creativity in fresh ways and will enable interactions between the hitherto insular creative community and social sectors such as doctors and scientists.
