Creativity, the Arts, and Globalization
“Creativity”, says Rollo May, in The Courage to Create, “arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitations, the latter (like the river banks) forcing the spontaneity into the various forms which are essential to a work of art or poem”. Art is a celebration of life, and its function is to make life better. As Henry James put it – “It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance….and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process”.
Art is the communication of ecstasy, an individual's expression of a culture. Today, we see ample evidence of such cultural expressions worldwide, with almost every country becoming a melting pot of diverse cultures, traditions and art forms, thus permanently changing the mosaic of the local arts and education patterns, enhancing them further. This globalization of art has resulted in tremendous creativity, with remarkable collaborations between artists from different cultural traditions and disciplines. It has also helped introduce world music, dance and visual art into school curricula all over the US.
Art builds bridges; art is an extraordinary tool for creative expression. Leonardo da Vinci was right is saying that “Art is the Queen of all sciences, communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world”.
