introduction
The Summit has been designed as an intimate and informal working meeting where leading experts in arts education scholarship, practice and policy will be able to dialogue with innovators from diverse areas of civil society to map the challenges that need to be faced in building new creative pedagogies for the 21stCentury.
Leading experts will offer short provocative keynotes in one of four strategic areas – the development of human creativity, advocacy, industrial partnership and policy – which will be debated by a plenary roundtable. Summit speakers will then be invited to present and develop proposals based on their experience at their own roundtables towards the development of a 5 year strategic plan.
summit structure
The Summit is structured into four steps, separated by two fine cultural evenings which we hope will include a Peruvian and a Korean performance that combine all our human languages and celebrate our creative intelligences:
Step 1: Building a forum of cooperation and innovation
For the afternoon of the 23rd July, you will need to bring a personal object which contains a profound story from your life, a story which might be described as a ‘landmark’ or turning point in your life and which is still meaningful for you today. You will return home with this ‘intimate object’ but the sharing of your story with our roundtable colleagues will lay the human and pedagogical foundations for the Summit process. We also invite you to bring an image or video clip of your present home or your community which you would be willing to leave in Hong Kong as a contribution to a memory of the Summit. Finally, we hope you will bring a small cultural gift to exchange with a new partner at the end of the Summit.
Step 2: Stimulating new questions and experimental proposals
On the 24th July, we will meet for the first and only time in a theatre inside the Academy for Performing Arts where Asian ministers and delegates and Hong Kong professionals will have an opportunity to listen to our opening debates.
To ensure that dialogues can take place between arts education and other significant spheres of civil society, we have scheduled two public roundtables of provocative keynotes (PK). These ‘provocateurs’ will respond to questioner keynotes (QK) seated in the audience who will arrive at the Summit with prepared questions. Each of the keynotes will have already read the synopsis of her/his roundtable colleagues and will be well-prepared to dialogue in public. The audience will have time to exchange ideas in pairs and trios, and the questioner keynotes will listen for new questions and ideas to bring to Step 3.
Step 3: Identifying key resources and potential collaborations
In the afternoon of the 24th we will move to our Summit working space. Each questioner keynote will chair a roundtable of five Summit speakers. Each speaker will present proposals of perceived connections between her/his projects and the projects of those present at the roundtable, based on already circulated papers and in relation to the aims of the WCS. Each speaker will be encouraged to identify potential resources and project-partners.
Step 4: Building and agreeing a strategic plan
The full day of July 25th is dedicated to ‘publishing’ proposals and circulating between roundtables to build the structures, priorities and collaborative projects of a five year strategic plan. This should also contain the preparations for the next World Creativity Summit. There will be time for new partners to meet and organise before a celebratory farewell dinner.
